Shahirah Brown earned her Juris Doctor Degree in 2017 from Widener University Delaware Law School and a Bachelor’s of Business Administration from Temple University. Her long-term commitment of advocating on behalf of indigent clients led her to the Defender Association of Philadelphia. Shahirah became an Assistant Public Defender to use the power of the law to protect the civil liberties of families in the Philadelphia community. While at the Defender Association of Philadelphia, she engaged in client interviews to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace and spearheaded a summer program for high school interns that provided students with courtroom exposure and trial experience. In August of 2021, Shahirah transitioned to the Office of General Counsel at The School District of Philadelphia office specializing in Special Education.
After joining the legal profession, Shahirah became committed to community outreach and education. She participated in numerous expungement clinics hosted by the Defender Association of Philadelphia and shop talk series held at local barber shops in Philadelphia that provided a range of services and resources to community members. In addition, she became involved with several organizations that were formed to address the challenges to advancement in the African American community and women of color. These organizations include: The Young Lawyer Division of the Philadelphia Bar Association as an executive Committee member, The Women Lawyer Division of the National Bar Association as an executive board member, The Barristers’ Association of Philadelphia executive board member and The National Council of Negro Women, Inc..
Shahirah is a powerful force inside and outside of the courtroom. She uses her positive attitude and passion to encourage others to work hard and succeed. In her free time, she loves creating educational/informational events for the benefit of others. Shahirah created Law Day at Grover Washington Middle School, where volunteer lawyers provided students with an insight to the legal system. Her most recent event was a Sistas In Suits Brunch that highlighted women empowerment and educated women who are invested in personal development, financial security and wellness. Shahirah Brown loves to read and enjoy spending time with her family and friends.
