The following two scholarships are available to students who fit
the criteria. Scholarships are awarded at our annual
scholarship event in the spring of each year.
Sadie T. M. Alexander Book Fund Scholarships
Sadie Tanner Mossell
Alexander was a woman of many firsts, including the first
African American woman in the U.S. to earn a PhD in Economics,
which she did in 1921. She was also not only the first African
American woman to graduate from the University Of Pennsylvania
School of Law, but also the first to be admitted to the
Pennsylvania Bar in 1927. The organization established a book
scholarship in her honor in 1984 because of her deep belief in
obtaining the highest education and training possible. The
first award given by the WLD was a single $300 book scholarship,
given to Dianna R. Williams. The organization now distributes
gifts of up to five $1000 book scholarships to deserving young
women to assist with the rising cost of books in law school.
The awards are given to five women selected by the Foundation of
the WLD who fit the following criteria:
·
African American Female Law Student
·
Financial Need
·
Academic Average
·
A currently enrolled second year law student who has
successfully completed at least two
semesters of law school.
Justice Juanita Kidd Stout Tuition Scholarship
Justice Juanita Kidd Stout was the first African American to
serve on a state supreme court when she was elected to serve on
the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. She was also the first
African-American woman to sit on the bench in Philadelphia, when
she was appointed to the Municipal Court and the first to be
elected to the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. While known
to be tough in the courtroom, she was also known as a strong
advocate for education with a genuine love of the law. It is
for these attributes that the WLD decided to honor her memory by
naming a scholarship in her honor. As of 1997, the Foundation
raised sufficient funds to endow a $5000 tuition scholarship to
be awarded to a deserving woman each year to honor this champion
of justice.
The awards are given to one woman each year selected by the
Foundation of the WLD who fits the following criteria:
·
African American Female Law Student
·
Financial Need
·
Academic Average
·
A currently enrolled second year law student who has
successfully
completed at least two semesters of law school.
