JUNE CLE

June 25, 2010 was an incredible day!  It began with the CLE, Road to the Robe, that far exceeded expectations.

Tamala Edwards, anchorwoman WPVI-TV/Channel 6, proved an exceptional moderator.  Mrs. Edwards's poignant and probing questions generated an open and honest discussion.  We are fortunate to have such an incredibly hard working reporter as a resident of this city.

Judges Petrese Tucker, Cheryl Allen, Ida Chen and Angeles Roca provided more than just insight into their individual experiences.  They supplied a road map scattered with successes and caveats.

Because of the dedication, courage and passions of each of these phenoms, the high school students in attendance received a precious gift that will help them make realistic decisions about their futures.  Additionally, the judges opened their courtroom to those students to provide them an opportunity to make their own observations.

WLD members are working to organize, with the judges and students, a program to maximize this opportunity.  Judges and lawyers (including in-house counsel) inter-ested in dedicating an hour or two over the summer are encouraged to send e-mails to:

Did you watch?  THE CLE MADE THE 6 ABC EVENING BROADCAST!  We hope to produce a similar program in the upcoming year.

ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON

The Annual Scholarship Luncheon began at noon in the Grand Ballroom.  Good food draped in the warmth and love of all those in attendance was a good beginning to an awesome program.

Mayor Michael Nutter paid tribute to this year's Doris May Harris Image Award Recipient, the Honorable Augusta A. Clark.  The venerable Clarke counselled attendees about the importance of self-definition.  As Mayor Nutter advised, her words were heeded and will, undoubtedly, become practice.

Keynote speaker and writer Marsha Haygood provided attendees with invaluable professional and personal tips for success.  Get a copy of The Little Black Book of Success:  Laws of Leadership for Black Women if you missed the luncheon.  Don't be fooled by the title.  The advice and "MAMAisms" has proven to transcend color and gender.

The sage Haygood signed more than 50 books for WLD.  The book will be used in the designing of programs for the next fiscal year. Please contact WLD if you are interested in obtaining a signed book.

Congratulations to our raffle winner Stacey G.  She won a gift certificate for a massage at The Wright Touch.

It was an incredible day!  That brings this year to a close.

We thank you all for your support.  But remember: the WLD still needs you!  It takes a lot of work in the beginning to get to the end.

Lastly, WLD thanks this year's Executive Committee, with special acknowledgement to the President Linda Medley, for an exceptional job.  There were numerous obstacles that Medley, through her insight, leadership and positive persistence, made successes.  It was an incredible year.
